Over a period of two years, I was an artist in residence at Gayhurst Primary Community School in Hackney. Using a children’s rights approach, I worked with individual pupils and small groups to support their learning and confidence and with whole classes to create art projects that engaged them in expressive, playful and imaginative activities, including I wish I could fly and the collaborative Stone Game.
The residency led to the school achieving the Arts Council Artsmark Award, which celebrates schools that use the arts to inspire learning and harness the power of the arts in developing happy, successful and confident young people.
Article 13 of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child states that ‘’all children have the right to express themselves …. in any media they choose’’
